CagedBird

“L’aceddo rintra aggia o canta p’amuri o canta pi raggia”

The caged bird sings for love or out of rage

Caged Bird, located in the historical market of Capo in Palermo, is a site-specific installation of ten bird cages and six canaries that links the dialogue between shop owners and passersby to the songs of canaries found at most storefronts.

Caged Bird reflects on the pain of shop owners living an everyday life based on survival and creates an awareness of this way of life that is complex and multifaceted.

The shop owners' joyful chants, which sometimes become outbursts of derision, express the ambivalence around their ability to actually live a life outside the confinements in which they are accustomed to living.
